Michael Esau

Educated at graduate and post graduate level at Bath University, Mike worked in public finance becoming a qualified chartered pubic finance accountant. After a successful academic career he worked as a consultant in financial capacity building in public financial management and for the last 14 years he has specialized in healthcare financing on international development projects as an associate with OPM and for other international development agencies and NGOs.

Mike has worked on a wide range of international health financing projects including evaluation of financing mechanisms, financial and business planning, financial reporting and governance mechanisms . He has worked for 3 years on a range of tasks relating to health financing for UHC in Kazakhstan and more recently on payment by results financing mechanisms as a foundation for the introduction of social health insurance social in Kazakhstan and Bangladesh. He has worked on developing healthcare budgeting systems and reviews of healthcare financing mechanisms following delegated financial autonomy reforms for local healthcare providers in Serbia, Armenia, Georgia and Kazakhstan. His recent experience includes the evaluation of budget support and financial reporting arrangements in South Sudan, Somalia, the UNHCR funding of emergency healthcare in the Lebanon, funding of maternal and child health services in Nigeria, ADB funding for a major healthcare project in the Gambia and the financial governance of DfID funded healthcare projects in Ghana.
