Biography
Aby Carpio has extensive field experience in the study of micro and SME markets and financial sectors in East Asia, South Asia, Latin America and Africa. She has carried out in-depth analyses of different types of financial institutions including microfinance banks, non-bank financial institutions, cooperatives and credit unions, and NGO-MFIs. Her recent assignments include the analysis of the key factors in successful cooperative development in various countries and the study of the supply of financial services in rural Tanzania. Aby has also undertaken an analysis for CGAP of the strategies of institutions successful in marketing small-balance deposits, which included rural and savings banks operating in secondary municipalities in the Philippines and Peru, as well as credit unions in the Central African Republic. Her experience in covering a range of double bottom-line institutions that have the mandate to build or enable greater access in the markets where they operate equips her with the skills to analyze the characteristic strengths and weaknesses of institutions operating in the low-income and/or unbanked markets and identify the appropriate interventions to improve access to financial services.
