Biography

Dr. George Mavrotas is Research Fellow and Project Director at the World Institute for Development Economics Research of the United Nations University (UNU-WIDER) based in Helsinki, Finland. Prior to UNU-WIDER he held academic positions at the Universities of Oxford and Manchester.

He has served as an advisor to the DFID-UK, UNICEF, ILO, UNDP, World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank & the EU among others and has more than sixteen years of experience in working with donor agencies and governments in developing countries.

His main area of expertise is development finance, broadly defined to include external finance (aid effectiveness, foreign direct investment, international capital flows, capital flight) but also domestic resource mobilisation (financial sector development, savings mobilization and finance and growth).

His other research interests include applied development economics, primary commodity markets and the economics of education & training. He has directed many research projects and supervised 12 PhD theses and numerous MA dissertations in the above research areas.

His publications include Commodity Supply Management by Producing Countries (Oxford University Press) and Advancing Development: Core Themes in Global Economics (Palgrave Macmillan, forthcoming) as well as numerous papers in journals (including the Review of Development Economics, Oxford Economic Papers, Weltwirtschaftliches Archiv, Journal of International Affairs, The Manchester School, the British Journal of Industrial Relations and the World Economy among others). He is currently directing three WIDER research projects on Development Aid: A Fresh Look, Financial Sector Development for Growth & Poverty Reduction and on Aid: Principles, Policies and Performance. He holds a doctorate in Economics and a M.Sc. in Development Economics from Oxford (with distinction), a MA in Economics & Econometrics from London University and a B.A. in Economics from the Athens University of Economics.
