Biography

Mark Essex is an economist with ten years of experience in relevant fields of work including more than six spent working in developing countries. Mark has worked mainly as a Consultant in the Public Sector Finance and Management Programme of OPM although has recently taken the lead role in OPM’s work on extractive industries. In 2009 he managed and undertook work on a macroeconomic impact assessment of a proposed gold mine in Romania and in 2008 worked on an economic and social review of a large bauxite mine in Guinea. He is currently managing OPM’s work as an accredited Validator for the EITI in various countries and recently completed the first EITI Validation in Africa (Liberia). He is also actively participating in OPM’s long standing work for the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) to enhance the contribution of mining and metals to social and economic development. Mark has broad public financial management and budgeting experience gained as an Overseas Development Institute (ODI) Fellow in the Department of Treasury, Papua New Guinea.
