Biography
Dr. Syed Zulfiqar Ali is a medical graduate with a Masters in Public Health (MPH) and over ten years experience of working in major programmes related to health systems at mid and senior management levels. Dr Ali is an Associate with Oxford Policy Management and is currently working as Deputy Team Leader in the NWFP Provincial Reform Programme and Capacity Building Support to Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) Secretariat, Pakistan. Until recently, Dr Ali was working as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan. The Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan is a not-for-profit organisation that strives to implement programmes based on self-sustaining strategies.
Dr Ali worked with the World Health Organisation for two years, first in Afghanistan as the short-term professional responsible for the Primary Health Care programmes which included a project called Basic Development Needs. Basic Development Needs (BDN) is an integrated socio-economic development approach aiming to achieve “Health for All’ by improving quality of life and reducing poverty through an intersectoral and community based strategy. He later moved to the regional office for the Eastern Mediterranean Region based in Cairo, Egypt, responsible for supporting the country office on Injury and Violence Prevention.
Dr Ali has worked in the public sector at district, provincial and national/federal levels in the health area. His work in the public sector was primarily with the Lady Health Workers’ Programme, which is aimed at providing health care and other social services at the doorsteps of the community. He has also worked with UNICEF Pakistan for more than two years as project officer for child health.
During his career, Zulfiqar has worked at mid and senior management positions with multi-cultural and multi-discipline teams, thus gaining familiarity with working in coordination with other relevant sectors for human development through primary health care.
