Project Information

The project is an investigation on the most promising models for branchless delivery of financial services in South Africa, Botswana and Mozambique, and also included the search for partners to test their operational viability.  The recommendations by OPM drew on our extensive research on branchless delivery of financial services in a range of countries including Bangladesh, India, Thailand, Philippines, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and ten countries in Africa.  Over and above this, some of the OECD countries relevant in the transmission of remittances to developing countries were also studied. The research covered the range of models of branchless banking and insurance (whether technology driven or based on agency arrangements) and the regulatory regimes established to cover these models.
