OPM provided advice to the South Africa National Treasury based on the lessons learned regarding the key factors that have contributed to successful credit union/cooperative system development in other countries – both at the provider, regulator/policy, and support levels of the financial system, and thereby ensure that the Cooperative Banks Act and newly-established Cooperative Banking Development Agency yield the desired outcomes. The team advised the National Treasury on what principles and operational procedures to apply in executing the current arrangements.
