Assessment of the impact of the UK on poverty in developing countries beyond aid
Project Information
This project contributed to the 2006 DFID White Paper. It examined some of the implications for development policy in low and middle income countries where dependence on official aid is already small or declining. There were three constituent tasks. First, the project developed a methodology for assessing the impact on development of the UK through channels other than official aid (e.g. channels such as trade, remittances, FDI, security policy, and environmental polices). This work was reported in the Phase I Report and was illustrated using quick profiles of seven selected countries (Bangladesh, China, Jamaica, Nigeria, Sudan, Tanzania, and South Africa). Second, the project team conducted two short case studies on the same problem in Bangladesh and Nigeria where selected issues of UK policy "beyond aid" were examined. These were reported in the Phase II Report. Third, the rapid assessments of the seven countries were used to extract examples and general lessons about the coherence (or otherwise) of UK policy across the various policies that can be argued to create a UK impact on development. This analysis was brought together in a Phase III, Summary Assessment Report.
