Increasing attention is being placed on the contribution of natural resources (both renewable and non-renewable) to development, and the conditions required for this contribution to be positive. This requires understanding and analysis of a broad range of factors, relating to economic policies and the institutional and political situation. OPM has worked with public and private sector bodies to consider how the exploitation of natural resources can bring about more sustainable development outcomes.

Recent work has included:

  • Study for the International Council on Mining and Metals(ICMM) to investigate how the exploitation of non-renewable mineral resources can support long-term and inter-generational socio-economic development. This includes four in-depth studies of cases of relative successful use of mining as part of broader economic and social development.
  • Development of a framework for DFID to understand the institutional and policy issues relating to the management of renewable natural resources.
  • Review of DFID’s support to the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).
  • Providing development economics seminars to make BP managers more aware of the developmental context in which their oil and gas projects in developing and transition countries are undertaken.
