OPM’s work focuses on supporting clients in the formulation and analysis of pro-poor trade policy. Our wide-ranging expertise enables us to take an holistic approach to trade policy advice to ensure that, at the national level, other domestic policies are taken into account and help to make trade reform part of a coherent national development strategy.

Our experience includes providing assistance and advice to developing countries in international and regional trade negotiations, support for the institutional processes required to enable pro-poor trade policy and analysis of the conceptual and operational factors required to integrate trade policy into national development strategies.

Expertise includes:

  • Trade policy formulation, reform and analysis.
  • Conduct of trade negotiations in the WTO and other international fora.
  • Mechanisms for implementation of WTO agreements.
  • Processes of institutional capacity building, human resources development and the building of public awareness.
  • Ability to set trade policy in the broader framework of institutional, economic and social issues.

Our recent work covers:

  1. Design, management, monitoring and evaluation of trade-related capacity building projects.
  2. Analysis of the political economy, institutions and processes through which trade policy is formulated and implemented.
  3. Support to WTO negotiations through policy analysis and advice.
  4. Commodity and sector-specific analysis of the implications of changing global trade rules on developing countries.
  5. Analysis of the implications of trade policy reform on the poor in developing countries.
  6. Analysis and advice on the options for and implications of regional integration and trade preferences.
