Project Information

One of the objectives of the Nepal Safer Motherhood Project is to quantify the financial barriers to women in accessing appropriate maternity care. OPM contributed to this project by investigating the financial and economic costs of obtaining maternal services and attempt to cost care, including transport, opportunity and direct service costs, for normal and complicated deliveries. The project also attempted to elicit estimates of willingness to pay for different service options. In addition, current financing schemes for the poor were documented and the results combined to generate a set of strategies for reducing financial barriers.
