Summary:
Under the right conditions, large-scale mining projects have huge potential to drive economic growth and poverty reduction. However, enhancing the positive social and economic contribution from mining depends on sound governance on the part of public-sector agencies and proactive collaboration between companies and other stakeholders to generate benefits at community as well as societal levels.
Under the ICMM’s ‘Mining: Partnerships for Development’ initiative, OPM updated the toolkit (previously written by OPM in 2005) to analyse mining’s contribution to social and economic development. This Toolkit includes a new ‘how to' section on undertaking an innovative life cycle analysis that we had devised by assessing the contribution of mining in Tanzania. We presented the findings of this report (entitled ‘Mining in Tanzania: What future can we expect?) to a workshop of key government representatives in Dar es Salaam in 2009. Further work in rolling out the toolkit to other mining countries has been ongoing since 2010. In addition, we updated the initial screening of all mining countries in order to identify the most mining-dependent countries in the world, utilising a multi-indicator definition that goes beyond export-dependency.
