Summary:
DFID is launching a major 5-year £50 million programme to improve nutrition among newborns and infants under 5 years of age in 5 states of northern Nigeria. The programme will deliver a number of evidence-based, highly cost-effective direct interventions for the prevention and treatment of malnutrition, including community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM), vitamin A supplementation and deworming, and promotion of improved infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices. The scale up of delivery of nutrition services will be used to raise the political profile of under nutrition in Nigeria and leverage government to coordinate and fund nutrition programmes.
OPM is leading a consortium of five partner organisations (OPM, Save the Children UK, IDS, LSHTM and ENN) to undertake:
(1) independent operational research to examine the effectiveness of different delivery platforms for nutrition services;
(2) Impact evaluation to ascertain the contribution of the DFID programme to changes in nutrition outcomes;
(3) cost-effectiveness analysis;
(4) activities for the dissemination and uptake of research and evaluation findings within and beyond Nigeria.
