The financial crisis that began in Western countries in 2007 now impacts the financial systems of most other countries and has precipitated real-economy recessions globally, including in developing countries. It is, however, premature to assess in great detail the depth and duration of these impacts or to identify which among the world’s poorest countries will face the most adverse consequences of the crisis.  This briefing note has the more modest intentions of  (i) reviewing the current state of play, (ii) summarising the channels of negative influence and (iii) commenting on how these influences might best be mitigated.
