OPM consultant does battle with ideas!
OPM consultant and development economist, Paul Jasper, was a panellist at this year’s Battle of Ideas Festival in London. Tackling the topic of whether Big Data can save the world, Paul took part in the annual gathering that sees thousands descend on the capital for a weekend of lively debate and discussion around issues as wide-ranging as drones to gaming.
Speaking at the Barbican in London, Paul debated the pros and cons of ‘Big Data’ alongside fellow panellists from the worlds of academia and media. Considering the topic through an international development lens, the panel looked at the potential of Big Data to support global policymaking in light of the post-2015 development agenda.
Drawing on insights from his recent article in the Guardian Online, Paul steered the conversation towards issues of data governance and access. As a consultant in OPM’s monitoring and evaluation portfolio, Paul was also able to use his own project experience to highlight the ways in which traditional survey methods and approaches can complement the use of Big Data in the development sphere.
